In 2027, the ABWRE will gather in Helsinki, Finland, for our inaugural awards ceremony. The name of the event is rooted in the Tupi-Guarani word Anauê, a powerful expression of greeting, connection, and sisterhood.
The Anauê Awards were created to recognize the brilliance, resilience, and global impact of Brazilian women in STEM who have crossed the Atlantic to advance their fields. It is a moment to celebrate our shared heritage, our scientific achievements, and the supportive network we are building across Europe.
Named in honor of Sonja Ashauer, the first Brazilian woman to earn a Ph.D. in Physics (graduating from the University of Cambridge in 1948). Her trajectory broke historic barriers for South American women in the exact sciences. This prize recognizes an early-career researcher who exemplifies that same brilliant potential, boundary-breaking spirit, and dedication to their field.
Named in honor of Dr. Thelma Krug, whose journey took her from a Ph.D. in England to becoming a globally recognized leader in climate science and the Vice-Chair of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This prize honors a senior researcher whose career demonstrates a lifetime of monumental scientific impact, outstanding leadership, and a deep commitment to global progress.
